This portfolio shows snippets of SH1 as it passes through the desert plateau.

Rated as one of the world’s great drives on tourism sites, it is the backdrop to one of the busiest pieces of highway in New Zealand.

Every trip has a different feel, and it can go from clear to fog in minutes. Prone to ice and snow due to its altitude, it can be a challenging drive, but few would disagree that on a clear-calm day, a trip over the ‘desert’ is something special – watch out for the upcoming doco on this stretch of road later this year.
