Kaikoura - Summerland Argosy - after the 'quake

While the Kaikoura section of State Highway 1 was being re-built after the earthquakes that destroyed large sections of the coast, truckers had to weave their way around dozens of work-zones, stops and deviations.

It often added an hour or more to the schedule and was blocked from use at night for several years.

One of Summerland’s Argosy tractors,  shows us the slalom that driving on this section of road entailed.

Still, no matter how frustrating this may have been, it was immeasurably better than the inland route over the Lewis that preceded the repairs.
