North Otago Road Metal Co. of Oamaru, 1966 Foden 8E7/24 tipper receiving some maintenance on a back country job. With their S24 fibreglass tilt cabs these Fodens when introduced in 1962 were some of the first British trucks to feature a tilting cab. This truck was powered by a 225 horsepower Foden FD6 Mk.7 turbocharged 2 stroke diesel engine, backed by a Foden 12 speed epicyclic gearbox with 4 gears on the stick and 3 splits on an air operated steering column lever with the power going to Foden worm diffs. It was later repowered with a more reliable Cummins NH250 as the Mk.7 2 stroke Foden diesels had a reputation for being a pretty short-life engine.

North Otago Road Metal Foden 8E7/24 having a lie down at the end of a bit of a slippery slope. With its long wheelbase and mid chassis mounted rams it was a bit prone to this sort of thing. From what I understand this possibly wasn't the first time the Foden fell over while spreading and it probably wasn't the last time this happened either.

The Foden worm diffs and wide spaced 4 spring bogie are easily seen in this shot.

Advertisement for the S40/S41 Foden range with Motor Panels steel cab as also fitted to ERF MV/MW trucks, Leyland/Scammell Crusaders, Guy Big J series trucks and contemporary Seddon trucks. From 1953 until 1967 Foden trucks were sold by Auckland firm, Fodenway Motors owned Len Buckby and his sons, Ted and John. Regional agents were Robert Holt & Sons in Hawkes Bay and Gore Services in Southland. In 1967 Fodens in the U.K. acquired Fodenway Motors and the Auckland premises became a factory branch. An odd thing about the picture in this advertisement is the Foden S40/S41 logger is an Australian truck operated by Mayne Nickless.
113 waikaia foden 8x4
1963 Foden FE 6/20 of Waikaia Transport, Freshford, Southland. This truck was powered by a 175 horsepower Foden FD6 Mk.6 2 stroke diesel engine with 12 speed Foden gearbox and Foden worm diffs. Apparently this truck with its set back front axles was ordered from the U.K. to the same chassis specification as the 3 Winstone Sandliners. Fodenway Motors were hoping to supply it to Winstones as well and when that didn't come to pass, it was sold to Fred Andrews of Waikaia Transport. As well as having the more powerful Mk.6 engine this truck also differed from the Winstone's trucks in having dual rear wheels on the tandem.
112 foden 8x4 chassis single
One of the 3 Foden FE6/20ET 8 wheelers supplied to Winstones in Auckland before having its tipping deck fitted. These trucks were known as Sandliners and were used to haul 12 cubic yards of sand on the truck plus tow a 2 axle trailer. The two front axles were set back to allow more weight to be carried legally on Class II roads. Single rear wheels on the rear bogie were another weight saving feature. Engines were the 150 horsepower Foden FD6 Mk.3 2 stroke diesel and the cabs were the fibreglass S21 "Mickey Mouse" version.
