The L series International trucks were produced from 1950-1953 and were replaced by the R series trucks. The cabs used on these trucks which IHC referred to as the Comfo Vision cab were very widely used on many different brands of U.S. and Canadian trucks in the 1950s-1960s era. As well as International, other users were Diamond T, Hendrickson, FWD, Duplex, Oshkosh, Sicard, Leyland-Canada, Canada and Cline.

Sometimes mistaken for an Australian AACO/ACCO International, this very interesting truck is a Mack based N.Z. special. This truck had a long and convoluted history as a heavy haulage tractor unit starting out as a normal control World War 2 era Mack NO model 6x6 powered by a Mack Thermodyne 707 cubic inches 6 cylinder overhead valve petrol engine. While the Mack NM series 6x6 wartime trucks with similar Thermodyne petrol engines featured Timken drive axles, the NO series were all Mack using a unique triple reduction front axle arrangement with drive to the wheels through the kingpins. Ray Vincent had imported this truck along with several other heavy trucks and surplus military equipment after World War 2. It was first operated by contractors, McJorrow Bros. from Ashburton. Originally it was an open cabbed truck and McJorrows fitted a basic closed cab during their ownership. Next it went to Southland based earthmoving contractor, L.D. (Dick) Collis. After Dick Collis it passed to North Otago earthmoving contractors Roadways, based at Oamaru and Otematata during the Benmore and Aviemore Dam construction period. It was during this time that it went through quite a transformation with its thirsty petrol engine replaced with an ex-military 6.71 GM 2 stroke diesel and it was reconfigured as a forward control truck with a not unattractive locally made cab utilising AACO International doors and bonnet. It also became a 6x4 with the Mack driven front axle replaced by a Timken non-driven front axle of the type fitted to the Federal 604 tank transporter tractor. Next owners were Burnett's Motors, Ashburton where it assisted their Kenworth L924R and International F230D on heavy hauls as well as pulling a tipulator on the Timaru breakwater job. While with Burnetts the Mack tandem with its distinctive witches hat hubs was replaced with a Timken double reduction rear end. Other owners of this impressive truck that combined U.S. quality and toughness with Kiwi ingenuity were A.V. Martyn & Co. at Timaru and Burns' Transport at Wyndham.
IMG_3440
Burnett's 1966 Kenworth L924R after a refurbishment. After several years duty as a front line heavy haulage tractor unit it became a 3 axle bulk tipper towing a 3 axle trailer. Before its days as a heavy haulage unit were over however it was involved in a roll over accident on Evans Pass Road between the Christchurch suburb of Sumner and the port of Lyttelton. It was recabbed with a later W model cab and received fibreglass front guards from an LW model in place of the original steel guards. Still powered by the trusty NH250 Cummins it was a striking bulk unit in its day.

Burnett's Motors, Ashburton, Dodge 300 series 8 wheel tipper with 2 axle tipping trailer. The twin steer set up on this truck was a local conversion of what I assume to be a T310 6x4 model with 143 horsepower AEC AV470 diesel engine and Eaton 2 speed tandem on Hendrickson walking beam suspension.

One of 2 Leyland Octopus model 24OT tippers operated by North Otago Road Metal Co. of Oamaru. This truck with its 2 axle tipping trailer was operated by associate company, Southern Crushing. Powered by a 200 horsepower O.680 Power Plus Leyland diesel engine, 6 speed gearbox with splitter and with a hefty hub reduction rear end, these trucks would have been capable machines. With 4 axles under them they were also pretty stable tippers. Known as the Leyland Freightline series, the Ergomatic tilt cabs were built for Leyland and other Leyland Group brands, AEC and Albion by Joseph Sankey of Birmingham.

North Otago Road Metal Co. of Oamaru, 1966 Foden 8E7/24 tipper receiving some maintenance on a back country job. With their S24 fibreglass tilt cabs these Fodens when introduced in 1962 were some of the first British trucks to feature a tilting cab. This truck was powered by a 225 horsepower Foden FD6 Mk.7 turbocharged 2 stroke diesel engine, backed by a Foden 12 speed epicyclic gearbox with 4 gears on the stick and 3 splits on an air operated steering column lever with the power going to Foden worm diffs. It was later repowered with a more reliable Cummins NH250 as the Mk.7 2 stroke Foden diesels had a reputation for being a pretty short-life engine.

Aerial shot of 2 of North Otago Road Metals' Dodge 300 series tippers towing single axle trailers on a roading job. A Michigan front end loader is tipping into the hopper. The material is carried from the hopper up to the shaker screen above the truck deck by a rubber belt. The screened gravel drops through the screen onto the truck deck and the tailings are carried onto the short chute to drop over the edge of the bank. A simple, but efficient way to screen gravel. A well known manufacturer of this type of screen were Christchurch engineers, Paintin & Nottingham.

With 10 stud wheels as opposed to the 8 stud wheels fitted to the 3165/D308 models, this is likely to be a D309 or D310 model. Both these models had AEC diesels with the D309 having a 127 horsepower AV410 engine and the D310 having a 143 horsepower AV470 engine.

No.5 in the North Otago Road Metals fleet, a Ford DT800 has the cab tilted for some running repairs. The Ford D series was introduced by Ford in the U.K. in 1965 and were certainly a big step forward in cab design with a roomy easy to tilt cab, compared to the forward control Thames Trader range they replaced. The D series were initially offered in sizes from the 2 ton 6 stud 16" wheel D200 up to the 8 ton 10 stud 20" wheel D800 and DT800 6x4. The D series offered two Canadian Ford petrol 6 cylinder engines of 240 and 300 cubic inches and diesel engines were a Ford 240 cubic inches 4 cylinder-(later 253 c.i.d. as well) and initially two 6 cylinder diesels of 330 and 363 cubic inches-(later there was a 380 c.i.d. version too). While the Ford diesels were a similar design to the engines used in the Trader range they were slanted over to ensure they didn't intrude too far into the new cab. Later engines available were the 150 horsepower Turbo 360 in the D850 and DT1400 6x4 and 185 horsepower Cummins V8185 in the D1000 series. Earlier model trucks like the Bedford S model and the Thames Trader had the front axle and engine mounted as far forward as possible with somewhat difficult driver access with a short door cab and step ring on the front wheel to assist entry. The D series and the Bedford TK-(introduced in 1960) had much better cab access with the front axle and engine set further back and a low step in front of the wheel-not really revolutionary though because the 7 ton Commer had been like that from 1948. In the S Bedford and Trader the driver sat beside the engine with quite a large engine cover taking up room in the cab. The later designs had the driver sitting above and about level with the front of the engine. Although introduced five years later than Bedford's TK series, Ford D series really caught GM napping by having a tilt cab-something Bedford didn't introduce on medium weight trucks until 1980 with the TL series.

The agreement with P & H ran from the late 1930s to some time in the 1940s. In 1947 Newton Chambers entered into a similar agreement with the Koehring Company, also of Milwaukee to build their machines under license. The Koehring based cranes and excavators were badged as NCK machines and were popular machines here. New Zealand representatives of the brand were Dalhoff & King.

The truck on the far right appears to be one of the new TA series Badger or TC series Beaver models introduced c.1928.
