One of Burnett's Motors, Ashburton, Dodge K series stock units. This truck, no.62 was powered by a 185 horsepower Perkins V8.510 V8 diesel engine and is a single drive with trailing axle 6 wheeler. Notice the Jailbar Ford runabout in the background.

Another K series Dodge stock unit of Burnett's Motors, Ashburton. This truck, no.50 is slightly older than no.62 and was originally powered by a 185 horsepower Cummins V8185. The Cummins V8185 was not a reliable power unit and soon gained a reputation as something of a hand grenade. These short stroke high revving V8s were also fitted to the Ford D1000 series, the piano cab International ACCO 1950 series and the Australian BMC FJ10 series trucks. Neither the International 1950s with this engine-(1950s sold in N.Z. had the more reliable Perkins V8.510 engine) or the BMC FJ10s were sold here.

Burnett's Motors, Ashburton, Dodge 300 series 8 wheel tipper with 2 axle tipping trailer. The twin steer set up on this truck was a local conversion of what I assume to be a T310 6x4 model with 143 horsepower AEC AV470 diesel engine and Eaton 2 speed tandem on Hendrickson walking beam suspension.

Ruatoria Transport Dodge 300 series stock unit. The 300 series British Dodge trucks used the same short door LAD cab as the models CS3, 12C and 13C Leyland Comets and 14SC Super Comet. The LAD-(Leyland-Albion-Dodge) cabs were manufactured by Coventry Motor Panels in a short door version as seen here and a long door version as used by Albion and the big Leylands-Beaver, Retriever, Hippo, Octopus.

Aerial shot of 2 of North Otago Road Metals' Dodge 300 series tippers towing single axle trailers on a roading job. A Michigan front end loader is tipping into the hopper. The material is carried from the hopper up to the shaker screen above the truck deck by a rubber belt. The screened gravel drops through the screen onto the truck deck and the tailings are carried onto the short chute to drop over the edge of the bank. A simple, but efficient way to screen gravel. A well known manufacturer of this type of screen were Christchurch engineers, Paintin & Nottingham.

One of North Otago Road Metals' 300 series Dodge tippers. This truck would most likely be a model 3165 with 110 horsepower Leyland 375 diesel engine or a model D308 with c.115 horsepower Leyland 370 Power Plus diesel.

42
Another of North Otago Road Metals' Dodge trucks. This artic with tandem axle tipulator is a slightly bigger model than the 4 wheel tippers in the fleet. With 10 stud wheels as opposed to the 8 stud wheels fitted to the 3165/D308 models, this is likely to be a D309 or D310 model. Both these models had AEC diesels with the D309 having a 127 horsepower AV410 engine and the D310 having a 143 horsepower AV470 engine.

A great picture from the Manapouri Power Project days. Burnett's Motors 1967 International F230D and 1966 Kenworth L924R are hitched to a transporter loaded with a heavy piece of power generation gear and have pulled over to allow 2 other Burnett's trucks, a Dodge T310 6x4 and a Leyland Octopus loaded with large cable drums to pass. A Caterpillar 988 wheel loader is assisting at the rear on this heavy haul.

The Hippo is paired with a large bulk tipping semi-trailer with a 3 hydraulic ram hoist used for carting coal.

There must have been a large number of sheep for O'Malley's Transport, Ranfurly, to shift that day. One of their Perkins V8 powered Dodge K series artic units with 3 deck stock crate has just pulled out loaded while another one is backed up to the ramp awaiting loading. There are 6 other trucks waiting to load on the road-most of which appear to be TS3 Commers.
