Burnett's Motors, Ashburton, International LF195 tipper at work carting rocks on the Timaru breakwater job in the 1960s. Also in the picture is a Caterpillar D4-7U series bulldozer. The L series International trucks were produced from 1950-1953 and were replaced by the R series trucks. The cabs used on these trucks which IHC referred to as the Comfo Vision cab were very widely used on many different brands of U.S. and Canadian trucks in the 1950s-1960s era. As well as International, other users were Diamond T, Hendrickson, FWD, Duplex, Oshkosh, Sicard, Leyland-Canada, Canada and Cline.

Only two of these extended hood R model Internationals came to N.Z., this RDF210-H model for Burnett's Motors and another similar truck that went to Rotorua Carrying Co. Burnett's truck is shown here pulled up outside Burnett's Motors in Ashburton with an American Hoist & Derrick Co. crane/excavator belonging to the Wilkins & Davies Construction Co. The machine has had the boom removed and is sitting on a folding gooseneck transporter. The big R Line standard hood was fine for the Red Diamond petrol and small Buda and Cummins diesels offered, but when IHC wanted to offer a much heavier specification R model a longer hood arrangement was needed to house the big HR/NH series 672/743 Cummins diesels and the Rolls-Royce C series diesels available in Canada. IHC offered the RD-H series from 1955 to c.1960 and they were built for International by Diamond T in Chicago. This truck later went into the Utah Williamson Burnett joint venture fleet involved in construction work on the Manapouri Power Project.

Burnett's 1967 International F230D now painted Burnett's green-(it was painted yellow for a time) and lettered for Burnett's Motors Rural Transport Division, Ashburton. There are 2 Allis-Chalmers tractors on the folding gooseneck transporter. The big F210D and F230D International trucks replaced the RD-H series trucks in the IHC lineup in the early 1960s. F230Ds were especially heavy-spec trucks-usually powered by a Cummins NH250-(although the N.Z. Army specified their F230Ds with GM 6.71N power), 5 speed x 4 speed gearboxes, 65,000 lbs Timken SFDD double reduction tandem and 24" rubber. Burnett's truck had been changed to 20" wheels by this stage though. The large canister mounted ahead of the driver's door is a Luberfiner remote mounted bypass oil filter.

Burnett's Motors, Cartage Contractors, Ashburton, International D246F model 6x4 truck with a water turbine for a hydro-electric power station on the deck. D series International trucks were built from 1937-1940 and the D246F was a medium-heavy duty tandem drive model. The similar size 4x2 model was a D50. D246F models were powered by an International FBB298 petrol engine, a heavy duty 7 main bearing 6 cylinder engine that was the forerunner of the well known Red Diamond engines. Red Diamond engines were fitted to International trucks as late as the early 1970s and were built as large as 501 cubic inches with the RD501 engine.

Burnett's Motors, Ashburton, International Loadstar F1800D artic with two axle stepped deck semi-trailer and two axle single tyred drawbar trailer backed up to the ramp at the old Addington Saleyards, Christchurch. This was the first F1800D model Burnetts purchased and it later became a rigid tipper and towed a two axle tipping trailer. After Burnetts it went to Ashworth Contractors in Christchurch.

This truck was the second International Loadstar F1800D Burnetts Motors purchased and was new in 1968. For most of its life it carted stock, although it had the crates removed and carted logs with bolsters bolted to the deck after the August 1975 nor-west gale that devastated Canterbury plantations. In later years it became a concrete mixer truck at Burnett Construction Services, Ashburton concrete plant. In this picture it is lettered to Burnett Transport Freight Division, Ashburton. The changes in company name came about through changes in ownership after company founder, Bob Burnett sold part of the business to the Australian Brambles transport group. Brambles N.Z. operations eventually became part of the Owens group of companies, founded by Tauranga businessman, Sir Bob Owens. Burnetts owned four International Loadstar models, the first was an F1800 petrol with 197 horsepower V345 V8 motor, 5 x 3 speed gearboxes, IH RA341 30,000 lbs tandem and hydraulic brakes. The petrol one was eventually repowered with a Perkins V8 and became a mixer truck at Burnett's concrete plant in Ashburton. There were the two F1800Ds purchased new and another F1800D tractor unit purchased second hand from the North Island-it was based at Burnett Construction Services, Belfast yard and was later painted orange and worked for Brambles International Transport in Christchurch. Specifications of the F1800D models were Detroit Diesel 6V53N with 195 horsepower at 2800 r.p.m., 5 x 4 speed gearboxes, IH RA351 34,000 lbs tandem and full air brakes.

Hammond & McIntyre's "Frankenstein" truck is an ex-W.W.II International M5H-6 that has been fitted with a the cab and part of the bonnet from a Commer S or T series truck. The 20 odd tons of HD21 tractor would have provided a good load for the ex-military International, that was originally rated as a 2 1/2 ton 6x6.

Hammond & McIntyre's ex-W.W.II International M5H-6 6x6 transporting a big Allis-Chalmers HD19 tractor. The ex-military International truck has had the original IH FBC318 or FBC361 petrol engine replaced with a much more frugal Gardner diesel. The HD19 had a GM 6.71 diesel engine and was one of the first crawler tractors to have torque converter drive.

1971 International Fleetstar F2010A owned by Barry Caulfield at the time. This truck began life in the South Island with Clutha Carrying Company at Balclutha, later passing to Wilson's Transport. Originally powered by an International V549 V8 petrol engine it was first repowered with a Detroit Diesel 6V53 and at the time of the truck run it had a Cummins L10 engine.

Keith's F1800D was new to Colin Kerr Haulage in Dunedin where it was used to deliver bulk cement to the Manapouri power project. Next owners were rural carriers, C.H. Hyslop & Sons at Outram, then Southern Transport in Invercargill. With a drilling rig on the back Keith had used the truck in his drilling business, Dynes Road Drilling. With 195 horsepower Detroit 6V53N, 5 speed x 4 speed gearboxes and 34,000 lbs IH RA351 tandem, F1800Ds were capable if noisy workers.

This 1933 International D1 was the first old truck acquired by Bill Richardson in 1967. It is the same model as a truck owned by Bill's grandfather, Robert Richardson. The D1 model was actually built by the Willys-Overland Company of Toledo, Ohio for International Harvester who wished to have a light, reasonably good performing little truck to market alongside their heavier models. D1 models were offered in 1933 and 1934 and were fitted with a 213 cubic inches Willys side valve 6 cylinder engine and would become the C1 model in 1935 with more modern streamlined styling. Willys-Overland had been placed in receivership and IHC was able to buy the chassis and engine tooling from the receivers. The Willys engine was used in International trucks until 1949 and the last of the KB series trucks by then known as the Green Diamond engine.

O'Malley's c.1962-63 CA series Commer artic parked beside an International Mk.1 AACO 182 artic of McLaren Transport, another carrier based in Ranfurly. Over the years O'Malley's Transport ran Austins, Commers, K series tilt cab Dodges, Fuso/Mitsubishi, UD Nissan, Fiat V8s and finally Volvos following a tie-up with Holgate & Anderson at Omakau and Teviot Transport at Roxburgh. McLaren Transport mostly ran International trucks as they were the local IHC dealer in Ranfurly, although there were a couple of Seddon Atkinson 400 series artics also. In more recent years they have had Volvos, Isuzus and Hinos.

Smith Bros., Gisborne, Australian International ARC or ASC 160 series semi-forward control truck. This type of cab over engine truck was introduced by International Harvester in the U.S. in the early 1950s with the LC version of International's totally new L Line trucks. IHC in Australia didn't offer an ALC model and began manufacturinging this type in 1954 after the introduction of the AR series with the ARC 160 series. ARC and ASC 160/162 models were manufactured in Australia from 1954 until the later 1950s. ARC trucks were powered by Australian Silver Diamond ASD240 petrol engines and ASC trucks were powered by the larger Australian Black Diamond ABD264 petrol engines. The ASC series were manufactured from 1957. Apart from the badging the ARC and ASC trucks were virtually identical. In the U.S. IHC offered trucks of this type in 160 and heavier 180 series. One shortcoming of the Australian cab over 160 series was overloading of the front axle leading to wheel bearing problems and other failures as the load carrying area was shifted quite a bit further forward than on a conventional longer bonnet truck. Although only offered as 160 series trucks in Australia, I have seen these trucks fitted with heavier rated cast spoke wheel 180 series front axles to get around this problem.

A large piece of electrical equipment on a 4 axle low bed transporter for the Manapouri Power Project has been hauled by the ex-Burnett's Motors International RDF210-H, now with joint venture company, Utah Williamson Burnett and Burnett's Motors 1966 Canadian Kenworth L924R hitched together. Burnett's J1 Bedford has done duty as a pilot vehicle.

The Mack was originally a heavy duty petrol engined, bonneted 6x6. Some of the operators of this truck over the years were McJorrow Bros. from Ashburton, Southland based earthmoving contractor, L.D. (Dick) Collis, Roadways N.Z. at Oamaru and Otematata, Burnett's Motors, Ashburton, A.V. Martyn & Co. at Timaru and Burns Transport at Wyndham. Along the way it had the Mack Thermodyne petrol engine replaced with a GM 6.71 2 stroke diesel. It had the driven front axle replaced with a non-driving axle and was converted to a cab over engine configuration by Roadways and fitted with a cab fabricated in Oamaru-(while it resembles an AACO International cab, the only AACO parts are the doors.)

McBreen Jenkins Construction Co., Whangarei, International RF174 hitched to an ex-W.W.II Trailmobile single row of 8 transporter. The Trailmobile trailers were often paired with Federal 604 6x4 tractor units on tank and armoured vehicle haulage during the war. The cable excavator rigged as a dragline is a Northwest machine.

The LF170 series-(built 1950-53) replaced the earlier KB6F models-(built 1947-49) in the International truck lineup. LF174 trucks were powered by an International Super Blue Diamond 269 petrol engine, a modified version of the KB6F Blue Diamond BD269 engine.

An International AACO 182 Mk.2 of Mclennan's Transport, Blenheim and Nelson. It is quite an impressive unit with its tandem axle semi-trailer and 4 wheel drawbar trailer and its 148 horsepower International Australian Gold Diamond AGD282 petrol engine would have been working when it was fully loaded. Other engine options available in these trucks were a 128 horsepower Perkins 6.354 diesel in the AACOD 182 model and a 177 horsepower IH V345 V8 petrol engine in the AACO 184 model.

Both trucks used the same engine, a 142 horsepower Australian Blue Diamond ABD264 petrol, the 164 had a 5 speed gearbox, while the 162 had a 4 speed, the 164 had a slightly heavier Eaton 2 speed rear axle and the bigger truck rode on 6 stud Budd wheels as opposed to 5 stud for the 162.

The AB 180 series trucks had the same engine options as the AACO 180 series trucks-AGD282 petrol-AB182, Perkins 6.354 diesel-ABD182, V345 petrol-AB184. There was also a lighter AB164 with a 142 horsepower AGD264 petrol engine that was fitted with 6 stud Budd wheels as opposed to the cast spoke wheels fitted to the 180 series.

Nelson contractor, J.W. Steer's International AL162 with tandem axle lowbed trailer carting a large steel tank passing the Nelson Post Office building. Note the sacks and spare wheels sitting on the trailer gooseneck to assist traction. The AL series trucks were the first Australian built International trucks, built from the early 1950s in I.H.C. of Australia's truck factory at Dandenong in Victoria. They were based on the U.S. L Line trucks but were fitted with a version of the Australian built Dodge "Pilot House" cab in order to increase local content to satisfy the Australian authorities. The U.S. L Line trucks were fitted with IH's own Comfo Vision cab. The Pilot House cab had been fitted to U.S. and Canadian built Dodge, Fargo and De Soto trucks from 1948-1953 and was fitted to Australian built Dodge trucks as late as 1961. It was used on the Australian AL, AR, and AS series International trucks in the 1950s.

A very good load for this 1947-49 International KB6F 6x4. The bulldozer with hydraulic blade and rear mounted winch appears to be an International TD14-142 series. By the look of it this truck would have probably belonged to Gibbs Transport at Westport before the present owner.

An International KB6 or KB7 in a bit of difficulty crossing a West Coast river with a logging jinker in tow. The truck belonged to S.G. Wright, Logging Contractor of Hokitika and is obviously being winched out of the river. With those big stones on the riverbed it will be very hard on it getting out of there. If it had crossed the river the engine would certainly be dead with that depth of water as distributors, sparkplugs etc. don't appreciate too much moisture.

Tacon's Transport, Kumara, West Coast, International ACF174 6x4 with an International TD14 bulldozer on the deck. With its rear mounted winch and bush canopy this tractor was obviously used in logging operations in the bush.

Tacon's Transport, Kumara, International LF195 with two axle lowbed transporter in a West Coast bush scene. The Ransomes & Rapier face shovel is about to be unloaded off the transporter onto the road with the assistance of large wooden blocks. The only way to load or unload these old transporters was over the side and then a tracked machine was slewed around on the deck. The driver has backed the unit off the side of the road to get the deck height closer to road level.

Tacon's Transport, Kumara, International ACF174 with a load of logs on a two axle jinker that was obviously made from an old 6 wheel truck-possibly an ex-World War 2 GMC. The American AC series International trucks were introduced in 1957 as a short hood version of the A series also introduced that year replacing the S series. While the previous U.S. L, R, and S series trucks used the Comfo Vision cab, the new A/AC series used a completely new cab that would be used on Australian International AA-(starting in 1958), AB, C, and D Line trucks and Dodge AT4-(starting in 1962) and D5N trucks. The ACF174 was powered by an International Black Diamond BD308 6 cylinder petrol engine of 154 horsepower.

Bill Tacon's International LF195 with some pretty gnarly native logs chained to the bolsters. It must have been hot work as the bonnet sides have been removed. This truck would have been powered by an International Red Diamond 6 cylinder petrol engine-either an RD372, RD406 or RD450. Before passing to Tacons, this truck was operated by Bert Martyn of A.V. Martyn & Co., Timaru.

Two International trucks belonging to G.R. (George) Wallis of Greymouth parked outside the Albion Hotel at Luggate. The bigger truck is an American SF174 6x4 and the pickup is an Australian AR110 with Coupe Cab.

A Westland Transport, Hokitika, International AB182 tipper which has just been loaded with gravel by a company owned Ruston Bucyrus face shovel. Westland Transport was owned by the Eadie family and operated an interesting fleet of trucks over the years. Brands found in the fleet were International-D246F, LF174, AB182, Commer, Fuso, Mitsubishi, ERF-B series, AEC Majestic, Albion-PF107 Reiver, RE series LAD cab Reiver, Leyland-Super Hippo-(ex-Dairy Products, Edendale)-LAD cab Hippo-(ex-Southland Excavating), tilt cab Hippo and Bison, Scammell Handyman, Hino ZM120, Kenworth LW-(ex-J.V. Geany, Rotorua), Thames Trader, Ford D series and Bedford J series.

A Ministry of Works International F230D with folding gooseneck transporter carting a brand new Caterpillar dump truck-either a 769B or 773 model-(the M.O.W. purchased both types between 1972-1975-the 769B had a 35 ton capacity and was powered by a D343 6 cylinder engine, the 773 had a 50 ton capacity and was powered by a D346 V8 engine). This photograph appears to have been taken at Lyttelton Port and is probably the start of the journey down to the Upper Waitaki Power Scheme.

A Ministry of Works International F230D with a mighty Euclid TC12 twin power bulldozer on the folding gooseneck transporter. Folding gooseneck transporters were very good for loading heavy machinery as the gooseneck could be lowered to ground level and the machine was able to be safely driven on or off the trailer. The tractor unit required a winch and probably a reasonably skilful driver to get the transporter into transport position again though. The M.O.W. operated about 6 F230D heavy tractor units. Specifications were Cummins NH250 engine, 5 speed main by 4 speed auxilliary transmissions, heavy Timken double reduction rear ends on 24" cast spoke wheels-a very heavy duty unit. After World War 2 the P.W.D.-(Public Works Department-forerunner of the Ministry of Works) operated mainly ex-military tractor units-Scammell Pioneer 6x4, Diamond T 967-972 series 6x6, International M5H-6 6x6 etc. In the 1950s the Ministry purchased square cab 150 horsepower 680 powered 19.H/20.H Leyland Hippos, in the 1960s the F230Ds with Cummins NH250s and a lone Autocar DC7564 with Cummins NH220 arrived and the 1970s purchases were a Mack R797RS-375 V8, Kenworth W924Rs with NTC350 Cummins power and Fuso T93 and FV113 V8s.

A photograph dated April 30th 1968 of Dave Jackson's, Jackson's Timber Transport, Rotorua, International RF195 logger that was repowered with a Caterpillar 1673B series rated at 245 horsepower at 2200 r.p.m. The Caterpillar diesel which displaced 525 cubic inches and was a turbocharged/aftercooled higher horsepower automotive version of the D333 industrial/tractor engine as fitted to the D6B and D6C tractors replaced the original Red Diamond petrol engine. The repower was performed by Jack Tidd-Ross Todd at Te Rapa, Hamilton in 1968. As well as the new diesel engine, a Spicer 8516 16 speed Air-Matic compound transmission was fitted. The Air-Matic transmission had 4 forward gear positions and 4 air controlled splits in each lever position giving 16 forward gears. This truck later passed to George Wallis at Haast Transport and ironically Dave Jackson purchased a truck that was new in the South Island-the ex-Ryan Bros., Christchurch, International F210D-(the only F210D sold new the S.I.).

One of T. (Trevor) Doidge's International logging trucks photographed at Ruatahuna in 1966. T. Doidge Ltd. operated a very large fleet of logging units based in Tokoroa with at least 18 LF195 and RF195 International trucks at this time as well as SF174, ACF174, ACF182, BCF182, AACO 182 Mk.1 and Mk.2 IH models. From 1961 several of the Red Diamond petrol powered 190 series Internationals were repowered with GM 6.71 and 6V53N 2 stroke diesels by Ross Todd Motors at Cambridge and from 1967 Jack Tidd-Ross Todd at Te Rapa, Hamilton. In 1971 5 RF195s were repowered with Scania DS11 engines. Also in the fleet in the mid-1960s were 4 White 2064 models, one of which had its REO Gold Comet derived Super Mustang petrol engine replaced with a 6.71 GM diesel and another 2064 was repowered with a Caterpillar 1673B diesel rated at 245 horsepower. In 1963 and 1964 Ross Todd Motors also reworked 2 heavy ex-World War 2 American trucks into 6.71 GM powered log haulers for Doidges-Brutus was based on a Sterling DDS235 6x6 that had been operated by N.Z. Forest Products in its original state with Waukesha 145GK 779 cubic inches petrol engine. Brutus had an International L190 series Comfo Vision cab fitted and Colossus was based on a Mack NM series 6x6 which would originally have had a Mack Thermodyne 707 cubic inches petrol engine. Colossus was fitted with an International AA series cab with an ACF or BCF grille.

Southern Transport, Invercargill, 1964 International ABD182 with tandem axle lowbed in the Southern yard at Otepuni Ave., Invercargill. Sitting on the trailer is an International TD15 series B or C bulldozer with bush canopy and rippers. This truck was a diesel with 128 horsepower Perkins 6.354 and was purchased second hand from J.R. Hamilton, lime contractor at Kennington.

This truck, no.32 in the Southern Transport, Invercargill, fleet is a 1970 International ACCO 1840 stock unit with tandem axle semi-trailer and double deck crate. It was powered by a 212 horsepower IH V392 V8 petrol engine with 5 speed gearbox and Eaton 2 speed axle. Known as Mk.4 ACCOs these were the last model to use this cab before the release of the all new tilt cab ACCO-A series in 1972. IHC advertising referred to this cab as the "Forward Entry Cab" as the front axle was moved back and the longer door with step in front of the axle aided entry to the cab quite a lot compared to the earlier short door models.

Bill Richardson's Southern Transport Co. in Invercargill operated this International BCF182. This truck was new to A.W. Hay & Son, lime contractors at Te Anau. It is shown here hitched to the house moving trailer with a new house on board. The house would have been built by R. Richardson Ltd., a building company started by Bill's grandfather. The truck was powered by a 197 horsepower IH V345 V8 petrol engine with 5 speed main and 3 speed auxilliary transmissions and IH RA341 30,000 lbs tandem on Hendrickson walking beam suspension.

A 1961 International AACO 182 Mk.1, no.13 in the Southern Transport fleet. AACO and ACCO "piano cab or butter box" International trucks were sold in N.Z. between 1961-1972 running from Mk.1 through to Mk.4 models with engines ranging from 6 cylinder petrols-AGD282, 6.282, V8 petrols-V345, V392, 6 cylinder diesels-Perkins 6.354, and V8 diesels-Perkins V8.510, Cummins V8210/V504. This truck is photographed outside the workshop at the old Southern Transport yard in Otepuni Ave., Invercargill. Notice the Niagara Sawmilling For Timber signwriting on the bonnet-Niagara Sawmilling was a Richardson family owned sawmilling and timber company.

Another logging operator who ran a number of International trucks was R.G. (Bob) Woolston of Rotorua. His Mk.2 AACO 182 is seen here getting loaded by a Hough H50 loader with log grab in this photograph dated Dec. 1967. As well as AACOs, Bob Woolston had RF and RDF 195s, Loadstar F1800Ds, DCF400s and ACCOF 2150-A models.

A very tidy International Loadstar F1800 stock unit of C.H. Hyslop & Sons, carriers of Outram, Otago. New in 1962-63, this truck was the first of three Loadstar models operated by Hyslops, they also had a later spoke wheel F1800 Automatic with Allison automatic transmission behind the V345 petrol motor and a second hand F1800D diesel with GM 6V53N that was new to Colin Kerr Haulage, Dunedin.

One of Dunedin Carrying Company's International Loadstar F1800 tippers taking part in a parade. The sign on the load of gravel states that it is a 10 cubic yard capacity gravel spreading truck. Dunedin Carrying had at least 3 F1800 tippers.

Bassett's Logging Transport of Warkworth in Northland owned this International LF174 6x4 carting a massive kauri log. The tandem axle log jinker appears to use axles either from a Ford Thornton tandem or a GMC CCW/CCKW with Timken diffs.

W.T. Smith Carrier appears to have got his solid tyred 1920s model 33 or 43 International a bit stuck. Looks like the sack hanging in the open side of the cab to keep the worst of the weather out wouldn't do a lot for visibility.

An Internationa Harvester Co. of N.Z. advertisement featuring Farrier Waimak's SF174 with tandem axle tipulator.

The driver is levelling off his load of gravel in this picture of a Farrier & Co. International AR162 tipper. With its Silver Diamond SD240 petrol engine, 4 speed gearbox and 2 speed Eaton rear axle, this truck would have been quite a capable performer as a 5 yard tipper in its day. In the background two Austin trucks, a K4 Series 1 and a K4 Series 2 Loadstar are getting loaded under the bins.

A busy scene showing Farrier & Company's Metalmaster mobile crushing plant and 4 International AR162 tippers. The older truck parked on the other side of the plant is an International K6 or K7 model. The hopper is being loaded by a Link Belt Speeder face shovel with a Caterpillar D4400 or D315-(D4 size) power unit.

Farrier Waimak, Christchurch, International K6 or K7 tar sprayer at work on a roading job. K series International trucks were built from 1940-47 and were replaced by the revised KB series that was current from 1947-49 before being replaced in turn by the all new L Line trucks in 1950. K/KB 6 and 7 models were powered by IH FAB, FAC and BLD-(Blue Diamond) overhead valve 6 cylinder petrol engines which were well regarded truck engines in their day offering replaceable cylinder sleeves which was not usually a feature of similar sized competitor trucks. IHC used a series of letters to denote drive train features-S as in KBS7 referred to a 2 speed Eaton drive axle, T as in KS6T would refer to a factory trailing axle and 2 speed drive axle and F as in KB6F referred to tandem driven rear axles-6x4. Although not likely to be offered in this size of truck the letter R as in KBR11 referred to a double reduction drive axle.

A nice line up of Farrier & Company International tippers in this fleet photo. Farrier & Company-later to be known as Farrier Waimak were an old established Christchurch based roading and contracting company. In this picture of International trucks there are 6 C series-1934-37 and 5 D series-1937-1940. The truck nearest the camera is a C40F model 6x4.

Farrier & Co., Sydenham, Christchurch, International C40F negotiating a river crossing loaded with a fair bit of timber and towing a "Carryall" type scraper. The load is possibly wall and roof sections for a building and is complete with a water tank strapped on top. If this is the same truck as pictured in a previous photograph it appears to have a replacement cab fitted-a very utilitarian design compared to the earlier cab which more closely resembled the factory cabs fitted to these trucks in North America.

Farrier & Company, King St., Sydenham, Christchurch, International C series tractor unit with single axle lowbed transporter carrying Farrier's Link-Belt Speeder excavator, rigged with a dragline boom and clamshell bucket. In later years Farrier & Co./Farrier Waimak would move out of Christchurch to their new site at Coutts Island, Belfast, alongside the Waimakariri River.

Durham's Transport, Christchurch, Mk.1 International AACO 182 artic with tandem axle flat deck semi-trailer fitted with a swivelling bolster for carting long lengths of steel or concrete bridge beams.

J.W. Paton, carriers of Invercargill have hitched two International trucks up to what appears to be a trailer made from an old truck or steam wagon chassis. The excavator carbody and under carriage on that high wheeled trailer make a very ungainly load with a very high centre of gravity-things are definitely done differently today. The front truck is an c.1933-34 A4 and the second one is a 1934-36 C series-C30 or C35. The other truck is a c.1936 Fargo.

A busy scene at a gravel crushing plant. J. Crooks & Sons, Road & General Contractors, Invercargill, Ford Jailbar tipper is tipping in at the top and two Southland County Council tippers, an International K6 or K7 and a Chevrolet Loadmaster are loading out the finished products from the bins. The plant is being driven by an early model Caterpillar RD4 or D4 tractor with rear mounted belt pulley and what is probably a La Plant-Choate hydraulic blade.

A 1920s era International truck-probably a model 63 loaded with boxes. This style of truck was built by International Harvester from 1924-1928 and replaced the earlier "coal scuttle" type with the sloping bonnet and radiator mounted behind the engine. These trucks featured IH's internal gear drive rear axle.

A.R. Wallis, sawmillers from Ross on the West Coast operated these two International A4 trucks on timber and log hauling duties. They were powered by an IH FB series 279 cubic inches overhead valve, 7 main bearing 6 cylinder petrol engine that was the forerunner of the later well regarded Red Diamond engines that were still available in certain models into the early 1970s. With their chrome radiator surrounds and 8 spoke cast wheels they would have been impressive trucks in their day. The A4 model was available from 1930-1934 and these trucks would be later versions built from autumn 1932 until the A4 model ended production in 1934 as they have the more durable full floating rear axles that was introduced part way through 1932 production. The semi-floating rear axles fitted to earlier A4 trucks were a weak point of the design behind the powerful for the day 6 cylinder engine.

A very well stacked and roped load of sacks containing a reasonably light seed-either grass seed, cocksfoot seed or maybe chaff for horses on a Burnett's Motors International C40F truck. Parked outside Bob Burnett's garage in Ashburton, the sign on the building advertises another of Bob Burnett's businesses, the Mt. Somer coal mine.

Des Phelps, Gisborne based log cartage contractor was another loyal user of International trucks. This LF174 hitched to a 4 wheel trailer has a good load of native logs on board.

A Transport Nelson International C series-probably a C30 or C35 with sheep on its double deck wooden crate backed up to a ramp. The N.Z. made wooden framed cab is quite different in style to the factory cabs fitted to this model in the U.S.A.

Another International Loadstar F1800 concrete mixer truck, this one belonged to Ashby Bros., earthmoving, roading and ready mix concrete contractors from Christchurch. In this scene it is delivering concrete to a building construction job at the new University of Canterbury campus at Ilam in Christchurch. The P.& H. mobile crane on what is probably a Tidd carrier was operated by D.F. Nuttall of Christchurch.

A busy scene at the Timaru port in the early to mid-1960s. Burnett's Motors, Ashburton, International KB6F 6x4 with an odd looking 2 axle jinker that was made up using the tandem drive axles and part of the frame from an old Christchurch Tramways Board 6 wheel trolley bus. The KB6F model was powered by an IH Blue Diamond BLD269 6 cylinder petrol engine with a 5 speed gearbox/auxiliary gearbox combination and tandem drive axles on Hendrickson suspension. In the background a Hough H70 wheel loader is stockpiling logs ready to be loaded on the ship. A Mk.3 7 ton Commer, probably also belonging to Burnetts waits its turn to unload.

A hive of activity at Farrier Waimak's crushing plant at Coutts Island Road, Belfast. There are at least 5 AA model International trucks in the picture. Most are tippers, but one is an artic hooked up to a bitumen tank trailer. The two nearest trucks and the one that appears to be ready to back under the bins are AA164 models-identifiable by their 6 stud Budd wheels.

A very rare truck in N.Z., an International KB8F 6x4 belonging to Heavy Haulage of Invercargill. There were only two of this model to come to New Zealand and both of them began their working lives with the Europa Oil Company. This truck was based in Christchurch and had hauled petroleum products from the port of Lyttelton. It is shown here with an International BTD20 bulldozer-(a British built version of the U.S. TD20-200/201 series tractors with the International petrol start diesel engine replaced by a Rolls-Royce C series diesel engine) on the folding gooseneck transporter. The KB series trucks were current between 1947-1949 and this truck would have been powered by an IH Red Diamond 361 or 401 cubic inches 6 cylinder petrol engine. Not counting war surplus trucks In the early post war period they would have been the biggest American trucks to come here.

A.W. Hay & Son were lime spreading contractors and limeworks operators at the Elmwood Limeworks near Te Anau, they also owned the Greenhills Dunite quarry at Greenhills near Bluff. They operated several International trucks including this early-1960s BCF182 which appears to be new in this picture.
