There is also a lengthy article about the truck and some of the early adopters of this technology.

Road Boss

This magnificent White Road Boss was first put to work by Taieri Carrying in the eighties, but was best known under Maxwell colours, where it was driven by Glen Jacobs for nine years as a heavy transport tractor.
The truck spent a lot of time under this MTE ‘walking’ trailer which a massive deal in the eighties and nineties.
Glen also drove a 904 Kenworth which can be seen aiding Fulton Hogan’s new (at the time) SLT Actros on a haul over the Lindis Pass at 1:11:00

Fuel Haulage in Fiordland

World famous as one of the world’s most scenic roads, SH-94, (better known as the Milford Road) is the gateway to Milford Sound and one of New Zealand’s scenic jewels.
Milford Sound’s very survival as a tourist destination depends upon this truck, and others like it and those that preceded it, as Allied Petroleum haul the fuel that the tourist boat fleet, as well as the commercial fishing fleet need for their operations.
It’s a demanding drive for any vehicle, let alone a truck and trailer unit, by any measure, and a sterling example of just how essential the New Zealand road transport fleet is to the nation, and in this case, the tourism industry.
Don Graham drove this route for many years for Gore Services, and then Allied Petroleum and below are shots of his MAN in the 1980’s.

And here for 1999 footage of the T400 Kenworth that once plied this route

The weekly glimpse

Further to the reel of the Southern Transport Macks at work down south, this is a deeper look from the Truck Files Vol 1 dvd that was shot in 1999.

Stunning Sterling on the Lindis 2009

Shot mid-May 2009 for NZ Trucking Magazine, was ATL’s stunning Sterling, which was one of the last to be put on the road before the ‘Ford’ was pulled from the marketplace.

Seen here travelling from Cromwell, over the Deadman Point bridge, over the Lindis Pass and through the Mckenzie basin to Fairlie, the tractor and B-train cut an impressive sight.

Some of the images shot over the Lindis Pass are particularily inspiring and anybody who has driven this demanding route has been rewarded by spectacular scenery, lightshows and changeable conditions – you never know what you are going to get.

South Island trucking at its best.

Mogal R-Series Mack, S-Line - transformer shift over Evans Pass

A slice of history when Mogal were a big name in heavy haulage, with this R-series Mack and International teaming up to move a transformer out of Lyttelton and over Evans Pass headed who knows where.

Not sure of the date, probably late 1990’s.  More information would be appreciated. Contact me here.

Back in the nineties, when Mercedes-Benz franchise holder at the time – Cable Price – sold a Hitachi UH501 digger to Coal Corp for the Denniston mine on the West Coast – they wanted to maximise the brand exposure by carting the big digger on nothing but Merc’s.

Transporting the digger was a massive logistics exercise and Merc’s were drawn in from all over Canterbury and the ‘Coast for the exercise.

Most of the companies on this trip no longer ply our roads,  – but it was a unique operation at the time and well worth dusting off to be included on these pages.

Below are more shots of this shift for those that subscribe to truckarchive as a ‘Friend of the archive’ or higher.
